Basilica of Santa Maria la Real of Covadonga

About the place
Basilica of Santa Maria la Real of Covadonga is a monumental neoromanesque church built at the end of the nineteenth century. The basilica stands on the Cueto Pria hill and dominates the surrounding valley and forests. Its tall towers and balanced proportions contrast with the limestone cliffs of the Picos de Europa mountains. The building was conceived as a national sanctuary honoring the origins of the Asturian kingdom. The basilica forms the architectural focal point of the Covadonga sacred complex.
