Begur Castle

Begur Castle

About the place

The Begur Castle is a medieval fortification that has served as a defensive stronghold for the town since the eleventh century. The current remains consist mainly of the restored stone battlements and the sturdy base of the original towers. The fortress was significantly damaged during various conflicts, including the Napoleonic Wars, leaving behind the atmospheric ruins seen today. Visitors can reach the summit via a stone path that winds up from the historic center of the village. The top of the castle is marked by its iconic crenellated walls and serves as a natural balcony for watching sunsets over the Ampurdan plain.
