Cales Fonts

Old fishing harbour in Es Castell, its quay lined with bars and restaurants set in former boathouses.

Cales Fonts is a fishing port in Es Castell, the town at the mouth of the harbour of Mahón on Menorca. Its inlet shelters fishing boats moored along the quay, and the waterside buildings, many of them old boathouses, now hold bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours, with a handful of shops and market stalls between them. In the evening it becomes a busy place to eat and drink by the water.

What makes it special

Tables are set out along the quay, so dinner comes with fishing boats moored alongside and the harbour water beyond them. Cales Fonts is an evening place. Bars, restaurants and ice-cream parlours line the waterfront, a handful of shops and market stalls sit between them, and the noise builds as the night goes on.

Many of the restaurants occupy old boathouses at the back of the quay, which keeps the harbour looking like the working port it was. Earlier in the day the inlet is quiet: boats, still water and the houses of Es Castell above.

Good to know

  • The waterfront restaurants get very busy in the evening. Book a table if you have a particular place in mind.
  • The crowd grows as the night goes on. Come earlier for a calmer table and an easier walk along the quay.
  • Public toilets stand about 210 m away in a straight line, and a drinking water point about 260 m away.
  • The harbour is about eating, drinking and a walk along the quay. Plan it as an evening out and spend the day elsewhere.

Getting there

Driving in, leave the car at one of the two car parks that lie about 145 m and 175 m from the harbour in a straight line, and walk the rest.

By bus, the nearest stop is Esglèsia des Castell, about 340 m away; the next is Fontanelles, about 710 m away. From either, the walk runs through the streets of Es Castell to the waterfront.

Best time to visit

Best: early evening, when the bars and restaurants are open and the quay has not yet filled. The crowd builds steadily as the night goes on.

Avoid: late evening in high summer if you want space by the water. Menorca fills in July and August, and a harbour known for dinner fills with it.

A morning visit shows the inlet quiet, with the fishing boats and the still water to themselves.
