Cofrentes Castle

Cofrentes Castle

About the place

Cofrentes Castle is a historic fortress built on the foundations of a Roman stronghold. Its current form was shaped during the Islamic period and subsequent Christian reconstructions. The castle sits on rare black volcanic rock, enhancing its dramatic presence. The surrounding valleys of the Júcar and Cabriel rivers highlight the contrast between dark cliffs and light stone walls. It houses one of the oldest mechanical clocks in Spain, still functioning, and its layered architecture reflects centuries of military and political history.
