El Grifo Wine Museum occupies part of the El Grifo winery in the municipality of San Bartolomé, Lanzarote, on the edge of the La Geria wine country. The winery dates from 1775 and is one of the oldest in the Canary Islands. The museum displays old wine presses and other vintage machinery and follows the whole process of making wine, and visits are combined with tastings of the winery's own wines. The vineyards around it grow in the black volcanic soil of the island.

What makes it special
On the guided tour the first two wines are poured out among the vines, into a glass carried in a pouch round your neck. The vineyard is black volcanic ground, and the guides explain what it takes to grow grapes in this climate and this harsh soil, along with the history of the winery and the techniques it is still developing.
Back indoors, the tasting room pours four more wines, each with a different Canary Islands cheese. The museum itself walks through the whole winemaking process among old presses and vintage machinery. If you would rather set your own pace, the self-guided visit with an audio guide covers the same process and includes two tastings.
Good to know
- Pick a driver. The guided tour includes six wines; whoever drives back should go easy or skip them.
- Visits come in tiers. A self-guided audio-guide visit with two tastings, or guided tours that add the vineyard walk and more wines.
- Food and wine on site. A separate wine bar and restaurant stands on the estate, and the wines are on sale in the shop.
- Bring a hat in summer. The vineyard walk crosses open volcanic ground with no shade.
Getting there
The winery stands among vineyards in the countryside of San Bartolomé, and the simplest way in is by car. Two car parks lie about 110 and 130 m from the museum, so you leave the car and walk straight in.
The nearest bus stops, Masdache vuelta and Masdache, are about 1.1 km away in a straight line; the distance on the ground is longer than that.
Best time to visit
Best: a weekday morning, soon after opening.
Avoid: weekends, when the museum is closed, and the middle of a summer day if you are taking the vineyard tour.
The guided tour spends time outdoors on bare volcanic ground with no shade, and the morning is the cooler part of the day.
