Jorquera
About the place
Jorquera is an ancient fortified town that literally hovers over a river bend on a sheer cliff. Its layout is based on old Moorish walls that protected the site during the period of Arab rule. Narrow streets lead to the Parish Church of the Assumption, built in a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. Numerous viewpoints offer vistas of the fertile riverside gardens and the deep gorge that surrounds the town on almost all sides. This site clearly demonstrates how the traditional architecture of the region adapted to life on inaccessible peaks.
