Mascarat Canyon

Mascarat Canyon

About the place

Mascarat Canyon is a natural tectonic fissure forming a narrow passage along the coast. Three bridges span the gorge at different heights: a XIX-century stone bridge, a modern road viaduct, and a railway bridge. The sheer grey limestone walls show ancient water flows and provide cool shade even at midday. The canyon is a striking combination of natural and engineering marvels, emphasizing the scale of the cliffs and the boldness of its builders. A local legend tells of Mascarat, a masked outlaw who hid in these caves.
