Messner Mountain Museum Corones

Messner Mountain Museum Corones

Most of the building is inside the mountain: the galleries were cut into the summit of Plan de Corones, and only concrete openings show above the ridge.

Messner Mountain Museum Corones is a mountaineering museum built into the summit of Plan de Corones, above Marebbe in the Dolomites of northern Italy. Zaha Hadid designed it: concrete openings break the ridge, and the galleries sit inside the mountain behind them. The collection covers mountain art, alpine history and climbing artefacts, with a cinema room and an interior platform facing the peaks. It belongs to Reinhold Messner's museum series and is reached by gondola from the valley.

What makes it special

The gondola does the climbing, and the museum's first move at the top is the view: the interior platform faces the mountain range behind the building, and in clear weather the Alps run out to the horizon. Zaha Hadid's design carries as much of the visit as the collection does — smooth concrete, curved walls, daylight coming in through openings cut into the ridge. Inside are mountain paintings, alpine history and climbing artefacts, and a cinema room showing a film; nothing interactive beyond that, and the rooms are small. Come on a snowy day and the panorama is gone, leaving the galleries to stand on their own. Staff here know the subject and will talk about it.

Good to know

  • It gets crowded: the galleries are small, and at busy times moving between the rooms is awkward.
  • Weather decides half of it: in snow or low cloud the summit view is gone and only the collection is left.
  • Toilets: there are toilets at the museum, and more out on the summit within about 200 m.
  • Museum shop: a small shop sits inside the museum.

Getting there

The museum stands on the summit of Plan de Corones, and the way up is the cable car: drive to one of the gondola valley stations, ride up, then cross the summit on foot to the concrete entrance. Do not let a maps app route you up the mountain by car — Google Maps offers exactly that, and it is the wrong answer.

Best time to visit

Better: a clear day. The interior platform looks straight out at the peaks behind the museum, and in good visibility the Alps carry to the horizon.

Avoid: snowfall and low cloud. The architecture and the galleries hold up whatever the sky is doing, but the panorama that brings most people up the mountain vanishes completely.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How do you actually get up to the museum?

By gondola. Drive to one of the valley stations and ride up to the summit of Plan de Corones, then walk across the top to the entrance. Google Maps will offer to route a car up the mountain instead — ignore it.
  2. What is inside?

Mountain art, alpine history and climbing artefacts, and a cinema room showing a film. There is nothing interactive beyond that, and the rooms are small.
  3. Is it wheelchair accessible?

The entrance is wheelchair accessible and so is the toilet.
  4. Is it worth it for someone with no interest in climbing?

The Zaha Hadid building and the view from the interior platform carry the visit on their own. The collection is small, so anyone coming for the exhibits alone should expect a modest one.
