Ponta do Sossego Viewpoint is a public garden and lookout on the eastern coast of Sao Miguel, in the Nordeste area of the Azores. The grounds sit on the slope above the Atlantic: mown lawn, planted beds, benches, picnic tables and barbecue stands with running water. The view takes in the ocean and the cliffs along this side of the island. It is one of the better-kept stops on the coast road, and a common lunch break on a drive round Sao Miguel.

What makes it special
Ponta do Sossego is a garden as much as a lookout. The lawn is mown, the beds are planted and kept up, and pink flowers show through the greenery. The Atlantic fills the view, with the cliffs of the Nordeste coast running off to the side. Picnic tables stand among the planting, and there are barbecue stands with running water, benches and thatched shelters for shade. Cattle graze in the field across the road, and cats wander the gardens. Many lookouts on this coast are a lay-by and a railing. This one is a park, and it is kept clean.

Getting there
The viewpoint sits on the EN1-1A, in the Nordeste area, and almost everyone arrives by car. The car park is at the entrance, about 80 m from the lookout, and the gardens begin where you leave the car. There is nothing to climb and no trail to find. The nearest bus stop is about 650 m away.
Best time to visit
Better: a clear day, when the ocean horizon and the cliffs are open to view.
Avoid: busy days, when the car park fills up.
The gardens are the other half of the stop, so there is still something to look at in flat light. But people drive out here for the Atlantic, and low cloud takes it away.
