Route of the Faces

Route of the Faces

About the place

The Ruta de las Caras is an open-air sculpture trail where artists have carved faces and figures directly into the sandstone cliffs above the Buendia reservoir. The carvings range from roughly 0.7 to 4 meters in height, the largest reaching about 4.5 meters. Work began in 1992 and continues, started by Eulogio Reguillo and Jorge Maldonado, so the count of pieces keeps growing. The subjects mix Eastern deities such as Maitreya and Krishna with skulls, Templar crosses and other symbolic figures, scattered among aromatic pines. It is a short, signposted and free loop, an easy stop that pairs a quiet pine-forest walk with the reservoir views of Cuenca.
