San Agustin Beach

Quiet resort beach on Gran Canaria's south coast, with gentle waves and sunrise over the Atlantic

San Agustín Beach lies in front of San Agustín, a seaside resort on the south coast of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands. The resort is part of Maspalomas, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and was one of the first resort developments on the southern coast, the stretch that later grew to run from Maspalomas to Puerto de Mogán. It remains a modest community, and its beach is known for quiet sand, gentle waves and sunrise over the sea.

What makes it special

The sun comes up straight out of the Atlantic in front of this beach, and at that hour the sand is close to empty. Even later in the day San Agustín Beach stays uncrowded.

The waves roll in gently. That makes it a place where beginners learn to surf, and a surf school gives lessons here.

The facilities are simple and cover the basics: sunbeds for hire, a lifeguard tower on the sand and a couple of restaurants along the beach front for coffee or lunch. San Agustín was one of the first resorts built on this coast, and its beach still has the low-key feel of a modest resort community.

Good to know

  • Wind: the beach is often windy, so bring a layer and something to weigh down towels.
  • Toilets: there are none on the sand; a free public block stands about 70 m away, and the beach-front restaurants let customers use theirs.
  • Water: there is no public drinking fountain nearby, so bring water or buy it at the beach-front restaurants.
  • Steps: the way down from the north side is a flight of steep steps; take care when carrying beach gear.

Getting there

The GC-1 motorway links San Agustín with the airport and with Las Palmas, so most visitors arrive by car along it. Two free car parks sit about 80 m away, and from there you walk down to the sand. Coming from the north side, the way down is a flight of steep steps.

By bus, the nearest stop is Clínica Roca, about 350 m away. A tourist information office stands at about the same distance.

Best time to visit

Best: early morning, when the sun rises over the sea in front of the beach and the sand is quiet.

Avoid: the middle of a hot day, and days when the wind is up.

A bare beach has no natural shade at midday, and wind on an open shore blows sand about and chills anyone coming out of the water.
