Ses Paisses de Cala d'Hort Archaeological Site

Ses Paisses de Cala d'Hort Archaeological Site

Excavated Punic settlement beside a traditional Ibizan finca above Cala d'Hort, with wide views over the sea.

Ses Paisses de Cala d'Hort is an archaeological site in the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia, in the south-west of Ibiza. Excavations here have uncovered the remains of a rural settlement founded in the Punic period. Beside the dig stands a finca, a country house built in the island's vernacular style a few centuries ago and now owned by the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza. The site looks out over the sea towards Es Vedrà.

What makes it special

The view does most of the work. From the excavated walls the hillside drops towards the sea, with the rock of Es Vedrà standing out on the water, and the open ground makes a good place to sit down with a picnic.

The dig shows the stone footings of a farm settlement worked by Punic-era islanders. Next to it stands a whitewashed finca, a few centuries old, its plain block-like rooms built the way Ibizan farmhouses were built for generations. The Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza owns the house, which puts an ancient farm and a traditional one side by side on the same slope.

Good to know

  • The information panels are in Catalan only.
  • The finca is not open inside: the visit is the excavation and the grounds around the house.
  • There are no toilets and no drinking water at the site, and none nearby. Bring water.
  • Bring food if you want to stay: the hillside works well for a picnic with the sea in front of you.

Getting there

The site is hard to find from the road, and the last stretch is no place for a car: leave it behind and walk in. The nearest car parks lie about 1.3 km away in a straight line, one of them on an unpaved surface, so the final approach is on foot.

Buses get no closer. The nearest stop is about 1.8 km away in a straight line, and the Es Cubells stop about 2.9 km.

Best time to visit

Best: spring or autumn, arriving in the morning.

Avoid: Mondays, when the site is closed, and the middle of the day in July and August.

The walk in starts at parking about 1.3 km away in a straight line, and covering that on foot under the midday sun of an Ibizan summer is hard going.
