Hvammstangi is a village on the Vatnsnes peninsula in north-west Iceland, on Miðfjörður. About 580 people live here, which makes it the largest settlement in Húnaþing vestra and the seat of the municipality. It has been a trading place since 1846 and still works as the service and education centre for the district around it. Shrimp fishing and the largest textile factory in Iceland carry the local economy. For travellers the reason to stop is the Icelandic Seal Center.

When to go
High season
Jun – Aug
Around midsummer the sun barely sets at this latitude, and there is light for driving the Vatnsnes peninsula late into the evening. Warm is relative on a north-facing coast.
Shoulder
Sep – Oct
Daylight shortens fast after the equinox. Roads are usually still clear, but the weather over Miðfjörður turns first.
Low season
Nov – Mar
December gives only a few usable hours of daylight this far north, and snow and wind close roads on the north coast at short notice.
Shoulder
Apr – May
Light comes back quickly, and by May the evenings are long again. Cold holds on, and the village is quiet.
How long to stay
Half a day covers Hvammstangi itself — the Icelandic Seal Center and a walk across a village of 580 people. One night makes sense if you are driving the Vatnsnes peninsula and want the town as a base for the coast and farms around it. Between November and March allow a spare day: weather on the north coast, not your schedule, decides when the roads are drivable.
Getting around
A car does the work here. Iceland has no railway, and Hvammstangi is a village of about 580 people, so arriving and leaving both mean driving. The town itself is walkable end to end in a few minutes. Everything it serves is not: the farms, the coast and the rest of the Vatnsnes peninsula are spread along roads that are slow rather than long.
One honest caveat. This is the north coast at 65 degrees north, and between November and March snow and wind shut roads at short notice. Check conditions before setting out, and treat a winter driving plan as an estimate.
