About the place
Hvammstangi calls itself Iceland's seal capital, and this non-profit museum is the reason. Founded in 2005 on the town's harbour, it doubles as a marine research and information point. The exhibits explain how seals live, how Icelanders hunted, feared and eventually protected them, and how to watch them responsibly. Its most useful service is at the desk: staff hand you a map and current advice on where the seals are hauling out along the Vatnsnes coast.
