Icelandic Emigration Center
About the place
After 1870, failing farms and hard winters pushed thousands of Icelanders to leave for land in Canada and the United States. Founded in 1996, the Emigration Center keeps that story in restored trading-post buildings on the Hofsós waterfront, in northwest Iceland. Permanent exhibits follow the emigrants from the docks to the prairies of Manitoba and North Dakota, and a genealogy library helps people of Icelandic descent trace their families.
