Hofsos Municipal Pool
About the place
Hofsós pool is why travellers detour to this tiny fishing village in northern Iceland. The long geothermal pool was designed by Basalt Architects — the studio behind the Blue Lagoon — and cut into the hillside so its edge lines up with the fjord, as if you could swim straight out into Skagafjörður. Its far edge points north to the island of Drangey, framed to match the Grettis saga. It is a working municipal pool, not a spa: warm year-round, cheaper and quieter than the famous lagoons.
