Hólar Cathedral
About the place
Hólar was one of Iceland's two bishoprics for seven centuries, the religious and educational centre of the north. The cathedral, consecrated in 1763, is the oldest stone church in the country, built from red sandstone quarried on the mountain above and filled with old church art. It stands in the valley of Hjaltadalur, alongside an agricultural university and a reconstructed turf house.
