Þrístapar

Þrístapar — Icelandic for "the three hillocks" — sits at the western edge of the Vatnsdalshólar mounds, just off the Ring Road in northwest Iceland. On a January morning in 1830 it was the site of the country's last execution: Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Friðrik Sigurðsson were beheaded here for the 1828 killing of the farmer Natan Ketilsson and another man. Today it is a sober memorial, its short path lined with plaques. Agnes's story reached the world through Hannah Kent's novel Burial Rites.
