Thingeyraklausturskirkja church

About the place
Thingeyraklausturskirkja church is located on the site of Iceland's first Benedictine monastery, founded in 1133. The current building was completed in 1877 and is constructed entirely from massive dressed basalt blocks. During construction, the stones were transported in winter on sleds across frozen Lake Hop. The church stands on a hill offering views of wide lagoons, distant sea cliffs, and coastal boulder fields along the shore. Thingeyraklausturskirkja church is a remarkable example of Icelandic stone ecclesiastical architecture.
