Blönduós Church

About the place
Blönduós Church stands in the small town of Blönduós, on the Ring Road in northwest Iceland. Architect Maggi Jónsson designed it to resemble a volcanic crater, and it was built between 1982 and 1993. Pale concrete slopes rise under dark metal to a hexagonal tower, a form locals nickname the whale church. Most travellers stop here on the Ring Road drive to see the exterior and, when the doors are open, the light-filled interior.
