Illugastaðir Seal Watching

Illugastaðir Seal Watching

About the place

On the western shore of the Vatnsnes peninsula, the farm at Illugastaðir is one of the surest places in Iceland to see harbour seals in the wild. A nearly flat, wheelchair-friendly path runs from a large car park to a hide, where binoculars look across low skerries. In good conditions dozens of seals lie hauled out on the rocks, and the shore is busy with eider ducks. It was also the farm of Natan Ketilsson, killed here in 1828 in the case that ended at Þrístapar.
