Borgarsandur Beach

Borgarsandur Beach

About the place

Borgarsandur is nearly two kilometres of dark sand and grass-topped dunes on the shore of Skagafjörður, just east of the fishing town of Sauðárkrókur in northwest Iceland. It is the empty northern beach people picture but rarely find: no ticket, no crowds, only surf, dunes and the pyramid of Drangey. Locals walk here, ride horses along the tideline and watch for seals, and whales sometimes pass offshore. There are no facilities on the sand, but the town and its campsite are minutes away.
