About the place
The church is a modest 1870 timber building on one of Skagafjörður's old church-farms, near Sauðárkrókur in northern Iceland. Older history lies beneath it: a Benedictine nunnery, one of only two in medieval Iceland, stood here from 1295 until the Reformation. A memorial across from the church marks the Reynistaður brothers, two boys who vanished with three companions crossing the Kjölur highlands in the winter of 1780 — a mystery still told today.
