Reynistadarkirkja church

About the place

Reynistadarkirkja church is a wooden church located in the Skagafjordur valley of northern Iceland. It was built in 1870 on the site of one of the most important medieval convents in the country, founded in 1295. The church interior reflects a restrained yet elegant style from a transitional period in Icelandic architecture. The surrounding landscape contains historic burial mounds linked to the former estate. Distant sea cliffs and coastal boulder fields are visible toward the northern shoreline.
