Kolugljufur Canyon

Kolugljúfur is a kilometre-long canyon in northwest Iceland, cut by the salmon river Víðidalsá down through the basalt. The river drops through the Kolufossar falls into a gorge 40 to 50 metres deep and up to 60 metres wide. A road bridge crosses right at the falls, so the whole scene is visible at a glance, and short paths follow the rim on both banks. It is named for Kola, a giantess of legend said to have lived here and caught salmon by hand.
