Alquezar

Alquezar

About the place

Alquezar town represents a striking fusion of Islamic origins and Christian fortification set above the limestone canyon of the Vero River. The town occupies a rocky ridge, where the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria rises on the foundations of a ninth century Muslim fortress. Over thousands of years, erosion sculpted the surrounding limestone into sheer walls, caves, and winding gorges that frame the settlement. The architecture follows the contours of the bedrock, with stone houses tightly aligned along the crest. Below, the river corridor combines Mediterranean vegetation with traces of historic water engineering. Together, landscape and architecture create a unified composition shaped equally by geology and human adaptation.
