Basilica des Fornas de Torrelló stands beside a country lane near Sant Climent, in the south-east of Menorca. Of the early Christian church the walls are reduced to low courses, but a large part of the mosaic pavement survives in situ, and it is this floor the site is known for. The remains are enclosed by a fine mesh fence and are looked at from outside. Parking sits about 30 m away, and fifteen minutes covers the visit.

What makes it special
The mosaic is the reason to stop. A large part of the basilica's floor lies exactly where it was laid, and you look at it through mesh fine enough to keep birds off the tesserae — protection that works, even if it stands between you and every photograph. Of the church itself there is little more than low walls and the shape of the plan, so a quarter of an hour covers everything: walk the enclosure, work out where the aisles ran, look again at the floor. On a cloudy day it holds up perfectly well, since the stone pattern needs no sun.
Good to know
- Behind a fence: the remains are enclosed and seen from outside, through mesh close enough to keep birds out — allow for that when photographing the mosaic.
- Fifteen minutes: the pavement and the low walls are the whole of it, so plan it as a stop on the way past.
- Nothing on site: no toilets, no drinking water and no information point within 800 m.
- Not kept swept: dust and leaf litter collect on the stone and flatten the pattern.
- Children: fine for children, though everything stays behind the fence and there is nothing to handle.
Getting there
The site sits beside the country lane east of Sant Climent, towards Cap d'en Font, and there is effectively no walk in: parking lies about 30 m from the remains. The lane is the awkward part. It takes one car at a time, with little room to pull in, so meeting something coming the other way means one of you reverses. A second car park, asphalted and free, lies about 1.2 km off. The nearest bus stops, Corniola - Escorxador and C. Corniola, 24, are about 1.25 km away in a straight line.
Best time to visit
Best: a cloudy day — the mosaic needs no sun, and the enclosure is a pleasant enough thing to walk round under flat light.
Avoid: any time the roads are busy, because the access lane takes a single car and passing on it is difficult.
The choice here is mostly about traffic on that lane; fifteen minutes at the fence works whenever you arrive.
