Ca n'Alluny (Casa de Robert Graves)

Ca n'Alluny (Casa de Robert Graves)

House museum of the poet Robert Graves in Deià, with his study, print room and a garden with views

Ca n'Alluny is the house at Deià, on the west coast of Mallorca, where Robert Graves, author of I, Claudius, lived and wrote. It was built for him in the early 1930s, and he spent most of the rest of his life here, dying in Deià in 1985. The house now runs as a historic house museum: an introductory film on his life, then the rooms, his study and print room, and the garden.

What makes it special

Graves's study and print room look as if he has just walked down into the village and will be back after lunch. The house is kept that way throughout, full of his belongings and papers from the decades he lived here.

The visit opens with a film on his life, thorough and built from archival photographs and old film clips, so it works whether or not you have read a line of his poetry. From there you go through the house room by room and out into the garden, which looks out over the hills around Deià.

Good to know

  • The visit starts with the film, so arrive with time to sit through it before the rooms.
  • No knowledge of Graves is needed: the film covers his life from the start.
  • There are toilets on site.
  • Graves is buried in the churchyard of Deià's parish church, on the hill in the village, if you want to see his grave after the house.

Getting there

Ca n'Alluny stands beside the Sóller road on the edge of Deià, and most people arrive by car. There is parking about 50 m away, with a second car park about 150 m off, so you leave the car and walk straight to the gate.

The s'Empeltada bus stops sit about 170 m away in a straight line, one on each side of the road, which makes the bus a workable alternative. The centre of Deià is within walking distance.

Best time to visit

Best: a weekday, with enough time for the film, the house and a slow turn round the garden.

Avoid: weekends, when the museum does not open.

The garden and the views are half the visit, and a west-coast village in the Tramuntana fills with day-trippers in high summer, so a weekday outside July and August is the easiest time.
