Can Prunera, also called Can Magraner, is a modernista mansion in Sóller, Mallorca, built between 1909 and 1911 for Joan Magraner, a local man who made his money in the fruit trade in France. Its style joins Catalan modernisme with French Art Nouveau. The Ferrocarril de Sóller, the town's railway company, bought the house in 2006, restored it and opened it as a museum in 2009. It has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 2000 and holds a private collection of 19th- and 20th-century art.

What makes it special
A wrought-iron balcony with rippling ironwork runs the full width of the first floor, and a balustrade of stone and iron, dressed in leaves, crowns the grey limestone front. Inside, the style carries through every room: frosted glass with plant and geometric patterns, tiled floors in natural and geometric designs, plaster ceilings heavy with vegetal relief, wallpapered walls, and period furniture kept in several rooms, the dining room among them. That unity of inside and outside is rare in Mallorca, and it is the reason to come.
The art is a separate matter. Most of it is late-20th-century painting, largely by Mallorcan artists, and has little to do with the house. Among it hang works by Joan Miró and ceramics by Picasso, with a room of paintings by the Sóller avant-garde painter Juli Ramis and two rooms of antique dolls. Behind the house, a garden café gives a quiet place to sit between floors.

Getting there
Can Prunera stands on Carrer de sa Lluna in Sóller, and you go in through the modern annexe beside the mansion, which holds the entrance and the shop. The nearest stop, Plaça dels Teixidors, is about 280 m away in a straight line. Arriving by car, there is a paid car park about 100 m away and another about 230 m away. From either, the last stretch is a walk along town streets to a street-level door.
Best time to visit
Best: a rainy day, or the heat of a summer afternoon. Avoid: Sunday afternoons, when the museum closes early. Almost all of the visit is indoors, among the period rooms and the galleries, so the house works in weather that spoils a day outside, and the garden café covers the break in between.
