DoloMythos

Mountain myths, a dinosaur section and cabinets of ornaments and decorations share one building in the middle of San Candido.

DoloMythos is a natural history museum in San Candido, in the South Tyrolean Dolomites. It sets the old myths of the range beside dinosaurs and natural history displays, and adds a large collection of ornaments and decorations, a gift shop and a bistro and deli counter. Children get a play area with a treasure hunt. The presentation is chaotic and thinly labelled, so come to browse. The building sits in the centre of the village, a short walk from the car parks and the bus stops.

What makes it special

Room after room, the labelling thins out and one section runs into the next, so what the place offers is a browse rather than a story of the mountains. Screens fill part of the gap, though they auto-scroll and serve their pages out of order. The part that works cleanly is aimed at children: a treasure hunt in the play area, good for about twenty minutes of digging. There is a gift shop, and a bistro and deli counter beside it, in a good-looking building in the middle of San Candido. On a wet Dolomite day the museum earns its place.

Good to know

  • Labelling: sparse throughout, and the sections run into one another without a clear order.
  • Info screens: they auto-scroll and serve their pages out of sequence, so reading one through takes some doing.
  • With children: the play area runs a treasure hunt, worth about twenty minutes of digging.
  • Rain plan: the whole museum is indoors, which is what fills it on days when the peaks are in cloud.
  • On site: toilets, a gift shop, and a bistro and deli counter.

Getting there

The museum stands in the middle of San Candido, so the last stretch is short whichever way you arrive. The nearest car park is a few dozen metres from the entrance; a second one close by is customers only. From the bus stops in the village centre it is under 200 m on foot, past the tourist information office, and the walk is all village street.

Best time to visit

Better: a wet or overcast day, when the peaks are in cloud and the outdoor plan has fallen through.

Avoid: clear weather — the mountains outside have the better claim on the day.

The museum is entirely indoors, which is the whole of its timing: it works exactly when the Dolomites do not. At Christmas the building is decorated and the mood turns festive, which suits families.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Is DoloMythos a good option in bad weather?

Yes. The museum is entirely indoors, and it is the standard fallback in San Candido when the peaks are in cloud and walking is off.
  2. Is there anything here for children?

The play area runs a treasure hunt, which holds children for about twenty minutes, and the museum is set up for families.
  3. Where do you park?

Wachtler Parking is 58 m from the entrance and charges a fee. A second car park 98 m away is reserved for customers.
  4. Is the museum wheelchair accessible?

The entrance, the toilet and a parking space are wheelchair accessible.
  5. Does it explain the geology and history of the Dolomites?

Only loosely. Labelling is sparse, sections blur into one another and the info screens auto-scroll out of order, so plan on browsing rather than following a thread.
