Ferrata degli Alpini

Ferrata degli Alpini

The path to the wire passes the standing ruin of a field hospital from the Great War.

Ferrata degli Alpini is a via ferrata on a rock wall at Passo Falzarego, above Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites. The approach from the car park takes 25 to 30 minutes. The climb runs 2.5 to 3 hours and is graded B to D, with a demanding lower section, several vertical pitches fitted with metal steps and a short overhang near the middle. The cable is in good condition. The descent takes up to an hour on loose ground, and the panorama from the top of the route is the reward.

Accessibility
No wheelchair access. The route is a cabled rock climb, reached by a 25–30 minute walk from the car park.
Parking
Free gravel car park about 700 m from the start. A second gravel car park about 900 m away is for customers only.
Difficulty
Graded B–D, medium overall. Approach 25–30 minutes on foot; 2.5–3 hours of climbing with vertical, exposed sections and a short overhang; descent up to an hour on loose, steep ground.
Transport
Nearest bus stop: Ra Nona, about 780 m from the start.

What makes it special

The first move off the ground goes straight up, and the wall does not ease off much after that. The cable is in good condition the whole way, and where the rock turns vertical there are metal steps bolted in — two or three sections of them, enough to carry anyone unsure of their footwork. Around the middle comes a small overhang, short and enjoyable. The exposure is what makes the route: long stretches with the ground dropping away under the boots, and a panorama that opens over the peaks around Falzarego. The lower section is the hardest part, and it spreads parties out early on.

Good to know

  • Gear — a cabled climb, so a full via ferrata set is needed. Guided parties go with Gruppo Guide Alpine Cortina, who supply the equipment.
  • No facilities — no toilets and no drinking water within 800 m of the start. Carry what you need.
  • Timing — 25 to 30 minutes walking in, 2.5 to 3 hours on the wire, up to an hour back down; about four hours car to car.
  • Crowds — several guided groups use this route. Start early to get on the wire ahead of them.
  • The descent — loose, dusty and steep, and the least enjoyable part of the day.

Getting there

Everything starts from Passo Falzarego. Cars stop in the gravel car park by the road, and there is a restaurant near the start. From the car park the walk in takes 25 to 30 minutes and ends at the foot of the wall, where the wire begins. The descent comes back to the same car park and takes up to an hour.

Best time to visit

Better: an early start, and a weekday if the schedule allows.

Avoid: setting off late in the morning.

Several guided groups take this route, and getting onto the wire ahead of them means the vertical pitches to yourself. One party that climbed midweek found the wall quiet.

Vertical, exposed pitches run through the whole route, including a short overhang, and a via ferrata set is the only thing between a climber and the drop. The walk down is loose, dusty and steep.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How long does Ferrata degli Alpini take?

About 25 to 30 minutes to walk in, 2.5 to 3 hours on the wire and up to an hour to get back down — roughly four hours car to car.
  2. How difficult is the route?

Medium overall, with sections graded B to D. The start is steep and the lower part is the awkward bit; higher up, two or three vertical pitches carry metal steps, and a small overhang near the middle needs agility rather than strength.
  3. Can beginners climb it?

With a guide, yes. A couple with scrambling and bouldering experience climbed it with Gruppo Guide Alpine Cortina, who provided all the equipment.
  4. Is there parking at the start?

A free gravel car park lies about 700 m away, with a restaurant near the start of the approach. A second gravel car park roughly 900 m off is reserved for customers.
  5. Are there toilets or drinking water?

No. Nothing within 800 m of the start, so bring your own water.
