Iruela Castle

About the place
The Iruela Castle occupies a strategic natural pedestal that made it nearly impregnable during the reconquest of Spain. The fortress features a prominent keep built by the Knights Templar upon the foundations of an earlier Berber fortification. Below the main tower, visitors can explore the ruins of the pre-Romanesque church of Santo Domingo, which was integrated into the complex. The panoramic views from the battlements offer a breathtaking perspective of the vast olive groves covering the province of Jaen. This architectural ensemble serves as a powerful symbol of the frontier history between Christian and Muslim territories in Andalusia.
