Levada Curral das Freiras (CF20)

Levada Curral das Freiras (CF20)

Ten kilometres of levada with a dry channel — and landslide damage that has turned walkers back three kilometres in.

Levada Curral das Freiras (CF20) is a walking route on Madeira, in the mountains above the village of Curral das Freiras. It follows an irrigation channel along steep slopes, with long flights of steps and stretches where the ground falls away beside the path. The full route runs about 10 km and takes seven to eight hours. Landslide damage has blocked sections of it. Come for the valley scenery and the exposure, not for an easy levada walk.

What makes it special

CF20 follows an irrigation channel cut into the mountainside above Curral das Freiras. It is a full mountain day, not a stroll beside water. The channel has been found dry, so what you walk is a narrow ledge on the slope rather than a path beside running water. Landslides have damaged the route, and one attempt ended three kilometres in, at a point where the path could not be passed. The reward is the terrain: steep valley walls, the village in the bowl below, and long flights of steps that climb and drop across the slope.

Good to know

  • Gear: walking poles and hiking shoes with proper grip. The path is stepped and steep, and footing matters more than speed.
  • Water: the levada channel has been found dry. Carry everything you plan to drink.
  • Landslides: sections of the route have been damaged and blocked. Walkers have been stopped three kilometres in and sent back the way they came.
  • Knees: long flights of steps run downhill as well as up. Anyone with weak knees should skip this one.

Getting there

Curral das Freiras is the starting point, and the walking begins in the village itself. From there the route follows the levada for about 10 km along the slope, with long flights of steps and steep gradients. There is no guarantee of getting through: landslide damage has stopped walkers partway, so plan the day on the assumption that you may have to return the way you came.

Best time to visit

Better: an early start, with the whole day clear.

Avoid: setting out late, and walking the route in wet weather.

The full route takes seven to eight hours, so a late start means finishing in the dark on steep, stepped ground. Rain makes the footing worse on a path that landslides have already damaged.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How long does the walk take?

Seven to eight hours for the full route, which runs about 10 km. Shorter out-and-back walks of around two hours are possible on the first stepped section.
  2. How hard is it?

Hard. The path is steep and stepped, and it demands sure-footedness and a head for heights. It is not recommended for anyone with weak knees.
  3. Is there water running in the levada channel?

Do not count on it. The channel has been found dry, so carry all the water you need for the day.
  4. Can the route be walked end to end?

Not reliably. Landslides have damaged the levada and blocked it partway, and walkers have been forced to turn back after about three kilometres.
  5. What should I take?

Walking poles, hiking shoes with grip, and your own water. The long flights of steps on steep ground are the main strain, downhill as much as up.
