MACE, the Museu d'Art Contemporani d'Eivissa, is the contemporary art museum of Ibiza Town, housed in Dalt Vila, the walled upper town. Founded in 1969, it spreads over several floors and shows a permanent collection of work by Ibizan and Spanish artists across a range of periods, movements and media, alongside changing exhibitions. The bottom floor is glazed over an archaeological dig site beneath the building.

What makes it special
You walk over the archaeology before you reach the art: the bottom floor is glass, and the excavated remains lie open beneath your feet. Above it the museum rises through several floors of spacious rooms. The permanent collection gathers Ibizan and Spanish artists across periods, movements and media, and changing exhibitions run alongside it.
There is a screening room, and a garden terrace for a pause between floors. The building holds its own as well, fitted into the historic centre of Dalt Vila, so the visit reads as part of a walk through the old town.
Good to know
- Closed on Mondays. On weekdays it shuts over the middle of the day, and at weekends it opens in the morning only.
- Free lockers take bags, so you can leave a day pack while you go round.
- Allow an hour to an hour and a half for the collection and the current exhibitions.
- Labels are in English and Spanish. Toilets are inside, and both the entrance and the toilet are wheelchair accessible.
Getting there
MACE stands inside Dalt Vila, the walled upper town, and the last stretch is on foot through its lanes. The nearest car park lies about 220 m away in a straight line, with a second about 290 m away. The nearest bus stop is about 300 m away.
The La Cúria tourist office (Oficina de Turisme La Cúria) is about 140 m from the museum, and a drinking-water fountain stands about 55 m away, worth knowing on a hot day in the old town.
Best time to visit
Best: a weekday morning, or the late-afternoon session from Tuesday to Friday.
Avoid: Mondays, when it is closed, and weekend afternoons, when it does not open.
The galleries are indoors, so the museum suits a rainy day or a break from the summer sun in Dalt Vila; on weekdays it closes over lunch, so arrive early enough in the morning to see it all before the break.
