High roadside viewpoint looking across a sea of clouds to Mount Teide, open to the sky at sunset and sunrise.

Chipeque Viewpoint is a scenic lookout in the municipality of Santa Úrsula on Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands. It stands high enough that the island's cloud layer often lies below it: when the clouds gather, the view runs across a flat white sea to Mount Teide. The viewpoint is known above all for sunsets and sunrises over Teide, and a car park sits right beside it.

What makes it special

Clouds under your feet and Teide straight ahead. When the cloud layer rolls in over the north of Tenerife, the viewpoint stays above it, and the volcano rises out of a white sea that hides everything below.

Sunset is the main event. The light turns the cloud tops orange and pink, and the sun sinks into the cloud layer before the official sunset time, so the show ends earlier than the clock says. Sunrise works as well: come up in the dark, wrap up, and watch the light spread over the clouds with Teide in front of you.

Photographers come for exactly this. The afternoon is quiet; by the time the sun goes down, the viewpoint is full.

Good to know

There are no toilets and no drinking water at the viewpoint or nearby. Bring what you need.
It is cold up here at dawn and after dark, even when the coast is warm. Bring a warm layer.
The sea of clouds depends on the weather: some days the air below is clear, other days the viewpoint itself sits inside the cloud.
Weekend and clear-weather sunsets draw a crowd, so come early if you want a place at the edge.

Getting there

You come by car. The car park is right at the viewpoint, about 10 m away, and there is more room to park along the road, so the walk from the car to the view is over almost as soon as it starts.

Buses do not come close. The nearest stops, Cominos and Aguamansa, are both about 3.5 km away in a straight line, which leaves the car as the practical way up.

A walking-trail guidepost, P. Lomo Negro, stands about 480 m away.

Best time to visit

Best: sunset or sunrise on a day when the cloud layer has formed below. For sunset, arrive an hour to an hour and a half before the official time.

Avoid: weekend evenings and clear-weather sunsets, if you want room.

The sun drops into the clouds early, and the viewpoint goes from quiet in the afternoon to crowded by the time the light goes.
