Pont de Sant Roc is a medieval gateway in the old town of Maó, the capital of Menorca. It was built in the 14th century as part of the walls that ringed the town against raids from the sea, and it is the only one of the old gates still standing. The stone arch spans Carrer de Sant Roc, and the street still runs beneath it, linking the gate to the lanes of the historic centre around it.

What makes it special
The street runs straight through it. You walk under the arch the way people entering Maó have done for centuries, and on the far side the old town carries on as if nothing had happened.
The walls that once closed off the town are gone, and houses have grown up where they stood. This gate is the piece that stayed: a block of weathered stone set across Carrer de Sant Roc, with the arch cut through its base. Standing beneath it, you get a sense of how tight the medieval town was.
The lanes around the gate are worth the wander, and the gate makes a natural starting point for a walk through the historic centre.
Good to know
- The gate is part of a public street: there is no ticket, no fence and no closing time.
- A tourist information office stands about 150 m away, useful for a map of the old town.
- A drinking-water tap is about 140 m away; the nearest toilets are about 260 m away, and free ones about 320 m away.
- The car parks near the gate charge a fee.
Getting there
By car, the nearest parking is in two paid car parks about 160 m and 180 m from the gate in a straight line. From either, the rest is a walk through the old town streets.
By bus, the closest stops are Pl. del Príncep, about 400 m away, and Moll de Ponent, about 430 m away. From both, you continue on foot into the old town and along Carrer de Sant Roc to the arch, which stands in the street itself.
Best time to visit
Best: early morning or evening.
Avoid: the middle of the day in July and August.
Menorca fills up in high summer, and the arch is easiest to see and photograph when the narrow street beneath it is empty.
