Sant Carles de Peralta Church is the church of Sant Carles de Peralta, a village in the north-east of Ibiza within the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu. It follows the traditional Ibizan pattern: a small whitewashed building with an arcaded porch of three arches before the entrance and walls two metres thick, where people and animals once took refuge. Inside are side chapels, carvings, paintings and the main altar. Bar Anita, the original gathering place for the island's hippies in the 1960s, stands next to it.

What makes it special
The way in is through a porch of three white arches under a wooden roof. Behind it, the doorway cuts through walls two metres thick, built heavy enough that people and their animals once sheltered inside during raids. Three crosses stand on one side of the facade, and a large patio opens in front of the church and runs along its side.
Inside, each of the side chapels holds its own image, carvings and paintings line the walls, and the main altar draws the eye. Next door is Bar Anita, where the island's hippies first gathered in the 1960s. Church and bar sit side by side in the centre of the village.
Good to know
- The door is not always open, even on a weekday. The porch, the patio and the facade can be seen either way.
- Bring water: there are no public toilets or drinking fountains nearby.
- This is a working church: during a service, stay at the back and save the photographs for afterwards.
Getting there
Sant Carles de Peralta sits on the EI-200 road in the north-east of Ibiza, and the church stands in the centre of the village, with Bar Anita beside it. There are two parking areas, about 23 m and 86 m away in a straight line, and the Sant Carles bus stop is about 28 m away, so from either one you are at the porch almost as soon as you step out. The coastal resort of Es Canar lies 5 km to the south-east.
Best time to visit
Best: morning or late afternoon. Avoid: midday in summer. Whitewash throws a high sun straight back and the open patio holds the heat, while a low sun puts shadow into the three arches of the porch and makes them easier to photograph.
