Santa Eulària des Riu is the third-largest town on Ibiza, strung along a wide bay on the island's east coast. The 15th-century fortress church of Puig de Missa looks down on it from the western end; the Port Esportiu marina, packed with restaurants and bars, closes the eastern end by the headland of Punta Arabí. The town has two beaches of gently sloping sand. Artists and writers have long settled here for the quiet, and the island's hippy markets lie close by.

When to go
Shoulder
Apr – May
Spring brings the town's own fiestas, the Easter procession and the centuries-old celebration on the first Sunday in May, and the Punta Arabí market in Es Canar opens for the season in April.
High season
Jun – Sep
The beaches and the marina are at their busiest, August above all, and Las Dalias near Sant Carles adds its night market from June to September.
Shoulder
Oct – Oct
The sea still holds the summer's warmth, the crowds thin out, and October is the last month of the Punta Arabí market.
Low season
Nov – Mar
The town belongs to its residents again, and Las Dalias is the one hippy market that keeps going through the winter.
How long to stay
One day covers the town itself: the climb to Puig de Missa, the old island life at Can Ros just below it, the bay as far as the marina, and dinner on Carrer de Sant Vicent. Three to five days suits a beach stay with time for the hippy markets at Es Canar and Las Dalias. A week works too, using the town as a base for Ibiza, with Ibiza Town 15 km away along the EI-200.
Getting around
The centre is laid out as a grid around Plaça d'Espanya, where the town hall stands. Carrer de Sant Jaume runs west to east; one street back and parallel to it, Carrer de Sant Vicent is pedestrianised and lined with tavernas and restaurants. Puig de Missa rises over the western end of the bay, and the Port Esportiu marina sits at the eastern end.
The EI-200 links Santa Eulària with Ibiza Town, 15 km to the southwest, and the airport is 22 km away. The caveat is scale: the municipality spreads across 153 km² of villages and coast, and the markets at Es Canar and near Sant Carles lie outside the town, so reaching them means a trip out by road.
