Cala Boix

Pine-backed cove of dark sand on Ibiza's north-east coast, with clear water and a beach bar

What makes it special

From the top, the whole cove opens out below you: a curve of dark sand, rock and pine on either side, and open sea beyond.

The wind that hits the clifftop drops away by the time you reach the sand. At beach level the water stays calm on days when other parts of the coast are choppy, and it is clear enough to watch the bottom as you swim.

The beach bar sits right on the cove with the view straight out to sea. Even with people on the sand, Cala Boix feels removed from the busier side of the island.

Good to know

  • The clifftop is windy; down on the sand it is calmer, so do not judge the swim by the wind at the top.
  • Sunbeds and parasols are few. Bring your own shade if you plan to stay the day.
  • A beach bar on the cove serves food and drinks, so there is no need to carry a full picnic.
  • A lifeguard watches the beach, and the calm water at beach level suits children.

Getting there

Most people come by car, along the lane that links Cala Boix with Cala Mastella. The nearest parking sits about 90 m from the beach in a straight line, with a second, unpaved area about 570 m away.

The closest bus stops are about 1.8 km away in a straight line, so arriving by bus means a walk along the road to finish. From the top, the view takes in the whole cove before you go down to the sand.

Best time to visit

Best: early morning, and the months either side of high summer.

Avoid: midday in July and August.

On this east-facing coast the morning light comes straight in off the sea, the sand is quiet before the day crowd arrives, and with few parasols the high-summer midday sun is hard to escape.
