Thingvellir
About the place
Thingvellir historic and geological site is a unique location in Iceland. It was the site of the founding of Althing, the oldest functioning parliament in the world, in 930. The rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates is clearly visible at the surface. The largest fissure, Almannagja, forms a natural corridor with towering cliffs. At the base, Lake Thingvallavatn’s coastal boulder fields hide deep cracks filled with crystal-clear glacial water.
