Surtshedlir Cave

Surtshedlir Cave

About the place

Surtshedlir is the most famous and longest lava tube in Iceland, carved within the Haldmundarhraun lava field. The cave’s walls are layered basalt, with some vaulted ceilings reaching impressive heights. The surroundings are quiet and dramatic: a black lava desert hides kilometers of tunnels beneath. The underground landscape feels otherworldly, transitioning into complete darkness inside the cave. Birds sometimes nest in sheltered rock crevices at the entrance, and in winter, ice stalagmites form inside.
