About the place
Hraunfossar is not a single plunging fall. Along nearly a kilometre of the Hvítá's bank in West Iceland, water seeps out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field and runs into the river as countless clear rivulets. Rain and meltwater filter through the porous lava for years before emerging at the ledges. The result is a low, wide band of white water over black rock and moss, with the river a strong glacial blue. Its neighbour Barnafoss is a few minutes upstream, and boardwalks and platforms make the site easy to reach.
