Vatnshellir Lava Cave

Vatnshellir Lava Cave was formed by a volcanic eruption from the nearby Purkhólar crater chain. Exploring the cave is like a journey to the center of the Earth, with visitors descending a tall spiral staircase thirty-five meters underground. Inside, visitors can see fascinating geological formations, including solidified lava stalactites and stalagmites. The walls display unusual "chocolate" colors rich in minerals. The deepest chamber is plunged into total darkness, where guides sometimes turn off all lights for visitors to experience complete silence and the energy of the sleeping volcano.
