Vatnshellir Lava Cave

About the place
Vatnshellir is a lava tube on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, formed by an eruption around 8,000 years ago and now part of Snæfellsjökull National Park. A guide leads small groups down spiral staircases to about 35 metres below the surface, then along some 200 metres of passage past mineral-coloured walls and hardened lava. At the deepest point the guide switches off every light. Helmets and torches are provided, and the cave stays cool in any weather.
