Basacol Reservoirs

Basacol Reservoirs

About the place

Basacol Reservoirs occupy natural depressions on the limestone plateau above Alquezar, forming a system for storing and managing water. Built centuries ago, they supplied the town’s irrigation channels and terraces, adapting ingeniously to the dry, porous terrain. The stone walls follow the contours of the plateau, making the water seem a natural part of the canyon. These reservoirs were essential for local agriculture and created a small reflective oasis amid the arid landscape. The network of channels descending from the pools traces the historic paths of water through the town and fields.
