Far des Cap Gros is a lighthouse on the headland above Port de Sóller, the harbour of Sóller on the north-west coast of Mallorca. It was built in 1842. The lighthouse and its grounds are closed to visitors, but the car park and open ground beside it serve as a viewpoint over the sea and the bay, and the spot is best known for its sunsets. A road and a footpath climb to it from Port de Sóller.

What makes it special
The sun goes down into the open sea in front of the lighthouse, and the sky keeps changing colour after it has gone. That is why people climb up in the evening, often with a bottle of wine and something to eat, and stay until the light fades. Below lies the almost circular bay of Port de Sóller, with the Serra de Tramuntana rising behind the town.
The lighthouse, built in 1842, stays behind its boundary; the views come from the car park and the ground beside it. The walk up is part of the reward, with the sea in view as the road climbs. Far des Cap Gros also lies on a loop of about 7 km that leaves the harbour, runs mostly through woodland and olive groves with gentle ups and downs, and comes back to the beach.
Good to know
- The lighthouse and its grounds are closed to visitors. The views are from the car park and the open ground beside it.
- There are no toilets and no drinking water at the lighthouse, and none nearby. Carry water for the climb.
- Parking beside the lighthouse runs to only a few spaces. On a sunset evening, arrive early or walk up.
- Road and footpath run the whole way, so trainers are enough.
- Walkers share the road with cars, and the way back after sunset is in the dark: bring a torch.
Getting there
Most people walk up from Port de Sóller. The nearest bus stops are down in Port de Sóller: Can Miró, about 1.4 km from the lighthouse in a straight line, and the harbour stop, about 1.6 km. From the harbour the way follows road and footpath uphill, and on a warm evening it is a climb that makes you sweat. Cars use the same road, so keep to the side.
The road also runs all the way up, ending at two parking areas about 60 m from the lighthouse. Spaces are few and go early on sunset evenings. A map board and a signpost stand by the car park.
Best time to visit
Best: sunset and the half-light just after it, when the sky over the sea keeps changing colour.
Avoid: the climb in the heat of a summer afternoon.
The walk up is warm work from June onwards and there is no water at the top, so in summer set off once the day has started to cool.
