Gerðuberg Cliffs

Gerðuberg is one of Iceland's cleanest displays of columnar basalt. A cliff of dark dolerite rises out of the grassland on southern Snæfellsnes, split into rows of mostly hexagonal pillars — the tallest reach 14 metres and are barely more than a metre wide. A thick body of lava cracked this way as it cooled and contracted. A gravel track off Route 54 ends at a small car park, and a level path runs along the foot of the wall.
