Helgafell

About the place
Helgafell, the "holy mountain", is barely a hill: 73 m of grassy basalt above the shore of Breiðafjörður, just south of Stykkishólmur in West Iceland. The settler Þórólfr Mostrarskegg dedicated it to Thor and held the Þórsnes assembly at its foot. Guðrún Ósvífursdóttir, the heroine of the Laxdæla saga, farmed here and was buried below. The climb from her grave takes about ten minutes and ends on a flat top above the fjord and its islands.
