Leirhnjukur Volcano Field

Leirhnjukur is an active volcanic field and part of the vast Krafla volcanic system. The area shows the results of the Krafla Fires eruptions from 1975 to 1984. The trail winds through black porous lava, fumaroles, and bright yellow sulfur deposits. The terrain looks otherworldly, like the surface of a young cooling planet. The ground is still hot in some places, and steam rises continuously from deep cracks.
