Hverir Geothermal Area

About the place
Hverir — also called Hverarönd or Námaskarð — is a high-temperature geothermal field at the foot of the striped Námafjall ridge, just off the Ring Road east of Reykjahlíð. There is no vegetation and no water to bathe in: boiling grey mud pools, hissing fumaroles and mineral crusts in ochre, red and sulphur-yellow, all under a strong smell of rotten eggs. Boardwalks and roped paths run between the vents, and it is free to walk at any hour.
