Grjotagja Lava Cave

Grjotagja Lava Cave

About the place

Grjotagja Lava Cave was formed by a tectonic fissure between the Eurasian and North American plates. It was popular for bathing until the 1970s. After volcanic eruptions from Krafla, water temperatures rose to dangerous levels and remained above fifty degrees for a long time. Currently, the temperature is gradually decreasing, but bathing is still prohibited for safety. The cave became globally famous as a filming location for "Game of Thrones," where a romantic scene between Jon Snow and Ygritte was shot. Sunlight through cracks illuminates the crystal-clear water, creating a magical glow.
