Hverfjall Crater
About the place
Hverfjall is a volcanic tuff ring crater located east of Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland. It formed around two thousand five hundred years ago during a steam explosion caused by magma interacting with groundwater. The name translates as “boiling mountain,” referring to its near-perfect circular shape. The crater measures about one kilometer in diameter and rises prominently above the surrounding plains. Two main hiking trails lead to the rim, offering views over the Dimmuborgir lava fields.
